Background of Soul Edge and its Leaders

Soul Edge Ministries has been growing and progressing as a cutting edge leadership training school. Over the past 6 years and 9 courses, Soul Edge has discipled 62 young people who have gone on to excel in their various callings and vocations. Soul Edge also draws from outside resources to enrich the program that we offer such as pastors and missionaries from other connected ministries as well as individuals with expertise in the field of outdoor adventure.

Leaders

The leaders of Soul Edge are passionate about discipleship. On staff this year for the 2014 courses, we have 3 dedicated young men and women.

While still in their 20's,  these team leaders have substantial experience on the mission field. The 2014 Soul Edge leaders all have external ministry internships & experience under their belt - Soul Survivor, Campus Crusade and Global Children's Movement to mention a few. Each also has Soul Edge as well as other ministry experience in 'developed' as well as 'developing' countries, ranging from the Congo, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya- not to mention other continents. They have also pursued other study ranging from BA Politics, to Engineering and Outdoor Emergency Response qualifications.

For this upcoming session, Sebastian Gray as well as Josh and Kiri Erb will be leading the 2014 team with the help of additional assistant leaders. Missionaries Joel and Joylyn Erb are also our oversight in Pelican Narrows (see partners).

Affiliation

Soul Edge is affiliated with and endorsed by Soul Survivor UK (See History page). Its church affiliation comes through Crossroads Church in Herbert which part of Life Links International (www.lifelinks.org). Our overseeing ordained Minister in Herbert is Richard Erb, the pastor of Crossroads Church. Richard has been ordained since 1992 previously serving in rural Calgary, Alberta. Richard Erb is also on our board of directors along with other locally accountable, as well as internationally based members- the later includes Mike Pilavachi (Soul Survivor International).

We have historically worked with a number of dedicated missionaries when in Africa -Kenyan, Ugandan and those from elsewhere- a number seem to be Dutch and American! We are blessed to have these and many other connections from numerous countries and ministries.

We are also privileged to have relationship with River of Life Church in Lethbridge. We really love their vision and heart and look forward to continuing relationship with them in these coming sessions.

When your 17 year old takes off to the other side of the world, with people you don't know, you ask yourself if you were wise to let them go…. well, as parents of a newly returned Soul Edger, we can confidently say it is the best thing we could have let our daughter do. I think she has learned in 5 months what many followers of Jesus take half their lives to learn - if ever. She has lost any teenage hangups she had, she is full of the joy of God, she never complains about anything anymore (since hacking through ice and snow, surviving insanity workouts and amusing extremely energetic under 8s in the "Kid's Corner" in Pelican Narrows, I think nothing daunts her now!), she is full of a new warmth, empathy and deep desire to live in the fullness of God's Kingdom. We cannot recommend it highly enough.

FAQs

Q1. What insurance does my son/daughter require?

A. Scrapes, bumps and twisted ankles and such are all unavoidable eventualities especially in 5 months of extreme sports and outdoor adventures! Many of the guys and girls prize their battle scars, but of course, when travelling outside of the UK or your normal country of residence, insurance IS essential. As in the acceptance pack, we require your son/daughter to purchase travel insurance of their choice. Additionally, we recommend participants (when possible), bring a VISA card, as generally health travel insurance claims must be paid up front initially and then will be reimbursed back by the insurance company with the appropriate documentation.

The geographical regions in the cover must correspond to those travelled in. Likewise the dates of travel must be included in the insurance period to avoid claiming problems. Winter Sports must be included in the cover since we will be snowboarding in Canada etc. We necessitate a minimum of 30 days of winter sports cover. Ideally horse riding should also be covered since this is a possible ranch activity and we generally spend time at the Blue Bronna Wilderness camp in Kananaskis Country, Alberta, Canada where horse treks are an activity. Canoe trips must also be covered, and the insurance policy should include emergency evacuation.

Q2. Can we pay fees in Installments?

A. Yes. There are a number of installment dates. For more details you can contact us directly or reference an acceptance pack. Due to changes in the currency exchange rates we have had to specify our course fees in Canadian Dollars.

For any other pressing questions, please feel free to contact us.
